Welcome to Zama American
Middle School

For the past fifteen years Zama American Middle School has been a part of Zama American High School grades 7-12 serving children from Camp Zama Army Post and Atsugi Navy Base. The school is located on the cherry blossom filled Army Post of Camp Zama in Zama, Japan, located 20 miles south of Tokyo in the Kanagawa Ken prefecture. Surrounded by many historical sites Zama American Middle School is the perfect place to spend your tour in Japan . School year 2006 - 2007 marked a very important milestone for the school as we began to transition into a separate and independent middle school. The school will be formally accredited by the North Central Accreditation Team this school year ensuring military, civilian, and international children receive a quality education designed to meet the developmental needs of this specific age child. The faculty, students, and parents are very excited about our new adventure of establishing a school which will focus on the academic, social, and behavior needs of the adolescent child.

The School Principal

Ms. Denise Leach grew up and attended schools in various sites in Texas and the Dominican Republic. After receiving her Bachelors’ in Education at the University of Texas, Austin she began her education career in Houston where she taught high school special education and worked for a private Educational Diagnostic Clinic. After three years teaching and completion of her Masters’ Degree of Education from the University of Houston, she decided to couple her career in education with her love of travel.

Ms. Leach began her DoDDS career with a four-year tour in Panama as a high school special education teacher. She then moved to Naples, Italy where she taught various elementary grade levels for six years. Ms. Leach then moved to Wuerzburg, Germany where she began her administrative career as the assistant principal of Wuerzburg American Middle School. After three years as assistant principal, Denise then became the principal of Wuerzburg American Middle School. She had remained in that position for the last six years. As a principal she joined Zama American Middle School in the Fall of 2006.

Ms. Leach enjoys the high energy, humor, and dedication of the middle school staff, as well as watching education unfold for students in the fifth through eighth grade levels. She finds much joy in being a part of the education and social development of the pre-adolescent and early adolescent youth.
